Our whuffle mentioned her track experiences already in previous posts but this time, she provides a much deeper look into the sport.

A
fter the long, snowy winter was over, soon one thing became very clear - the year was almost over since half of it was done already. I never thought January and then February would come so quickly.

In March I had to decide what sport I wanted to do, either playing softball (baseball for girls) or running track. Track is an athletic competition, where you can do four events at the most. There is a lot to choose from. You could run the mile or the two miles or 100m Dash. Or you ran in teams, each member of the relay running 100, 200, 400 or 800m. If you, just like me, really dislike running events, you could still do long jump, high jump, shot or discus. Well, when I first started track I was convinced that I would place either in long jump, shot or high jump. It hurts but I have to admit that I placed in neither of these three, nor in any other event.

Soon, I realized I was not just slow, but also clumsy. At our first meet I long jumped 9feet which I expected to be ok. Well, it obviously wasn't anywhere close to ok-ish since an average jump girl brings at least 12feet. Once I jumped 12.3feet and that was all I could do. If you calculate to meters, you understand why I was kind of bad. The winning girls jumped 15feet, the winning boys even 20feet!! Therefore I concentrated on doing better in shot, which was also something I really liked doing. In our second meet I even threw 22.5feet and I was very happy with that. I still didn't place, but I promised myself to throw better during the next meet. Yeah well, I never did. I mean I threw, but never more then 21feet. The best girls always had at least 30feet.

My third event was 100m dash, and, who would have guessed, I tried my best and got in last in almost all of my races. My best time was 16.90s, the winning girl did something between 12s and 13s or even less - I can't recall it. Because I'm a smart girl, I quickly figured out why I didn't win. I was simply too skinny for shot and too fat for running. Problem solved. Don't you dare thinking I changed because of my thesis! Cookies come always before sport. At high jump I didn't even start at meets since I already sucked in practice so badly - let's just not talk about it.We still had great fun

Even when I and my whole team weren't winning, we still had great fun cheering our teammates or buring each other in the jump pit. I totally enjoyed being soaked and cold for hours because track meets are cancelled only when there is a thunderstorm and there was not one freaking lightning at the sky. Getting free popcorn after the meet from the concession stand was fun, too. They always provided unhealthy food there and only seldom fruits were offered what bothered me a lot. Making new friends or meeting old ones, like the Norwegian boy I went to Chicago with, was another important part of such meets.

I enjoyed track a lot more then Cross Country and really miss doing it.

So remember if you ever get the change to do track- do it!
Bye Bye

Feet Conversion
1foot = 30,48cm
1ft = 12inches
1inch = 2,54cm
If you feel like this is way to complicated, google will eagerly calculate from one measure to the other.
