A little time travel E-mail
by Herr Zinner | English | Tuesday, 08 April 2008

We try to pick out the rare fantastic websites - every week a new website put on show. This week: How to have a look on the Internet of the 1990s.

O
kay, we're the only original Internet generation. But probably some of you guys can imagine that there really was an Internet before we even knew, how the power switch of a simple desktop computer works.

It has been the time when we were sitting on the playground not having to solve any insolvable issues coming up to meet ourselves in the middle of our daily routine. It might also have been when we were sitting in elementary school learning how to spell "Oma ist am Baum. Mimi ist im Auto. Otto und Tina singen im Park.". It was the time when Bill Gates informed our parents (and the rest of mankind) about a new computer generation being initiated by WINDOWS 95! What a revolution (actually it would be better, it never happened).

What was the weather like on July 8th, 1997? The internet of the past tells you!

Okay, by introducing that much, I zoned out a little from what I'm trying to tell you. Anyways Windows 95 made it to start the first Internet hype (the second one was probably five years later, some of you might remember). Wouldn't it be interesting to explore what this hype was all about? How did the 1995's (or 1996's) websites look like?

Thanks to a great invention it's an easy thing to find out more about "Web 1.0"! The Internet Archive's "Wayback Machine" archived the Internet since it started in the early 90s. And it still does, day by day, year by year.

Unfortunately not every website is saved perfectly. Often there are some of the pictures or other media items like flash or video clips missing. But clicking through the websites' contents still works in many cases. Just enter a domain name of your choice (it's smart to choose one which exists for years, maybe "spiegel.de" or  "wooling.net" - haha - to have a whole lot of results). You'll get an overview of the archived content. Clicking on one of the results forwards you to the website's look and content at that time.

Perhaps you might want to know what this archive is for. I don't know the answer; however, it might be exactly for what we're doing just now: To make future generations have a deep look into the  Internet of past times.
