Whuffle's notes on Homecoming-dance parties which are just awesome, winter sports and her most homesick time due to Christmas time.

omecoming was just awesome. I have to say that. Hello together, I, Magi S., am back with the weekly news for your entertainment.

"Homecoming" (see explanation below) came right after the Spirit Week which also was outstandingly much fun. We dressed up differently every day, so we had Hat-day, Black-orange-white-day, mismatch-day, twin-day and jersey-day. It was a really great week. Eventually, on Saturday, we all went to the school dance being all dressed up and pretty looking. If you grew up like I did, party includes fun as well as alcohol, but the drinking age is still 21 in the United States and none of the students are old enough for that; therefore, no drinking nor smoking or at least nothing that I knew of.
Drinking age is still 21Before we stepped on the scene we (a group of twelve people) went to the greatest steak restaurant with the best steak and mashed potatoes I've ever eaten. The Homecoming dance took place at school in the auditorium, where we Seniors had decorated the place with the this year theme - Fiesta. It was just awesome. Everybody from grade 8 to 12 was invited. There was space for dancing, and while I expected slow dance or even worse Country Music (!) people just started dancing to the coolest American music.

Having fun at the party.

Our DJ had the newest and most known stuff and we bounced and shook what we got! Though we didn't eat the snack they offered there, we were full of energy and life. Unfortunately, the party stopped at eleven o'clock and we all had to go home. But I slept like a baby this night, exhausted by all the dancing, happy about the wonderful time I had.
Sleeping like a baby‘Homecoming' ends the football season, the football players are ‘coming home' that's what the teachers told me. Don't think, after football you can relax! Right after the fall sports, the winter sports start, basketball, winter guard and weight lifting. I did winter guard that's where you swing and toss a six feet large flag. And while you're spinning this complicated thing, you also got to move delicately and gracefully with a smile in your face. We performed our dance with the song "Thanks for the Memories" by Fall Out Boy.

While our basketball team (boys and girls) was losing game after game, we didn't do well at the competition either. Due to bad circumstances we were condemned to fail. But at least our power lifting team won some prices which helped out a little.
Chicago weekendIn December I, my host sister and a friend of mine took off for a weekend in Chicago! We traveled in a group full of other exchange students from all over the world. We had an Australian girl, a bunch of Germans, Swedish kids, an Switzerland boy, Koreans and Thais and and and. It was a wonderful weekend, at night it started snowing in the city, at day we had sunshine. It was just beautiful to see all these city lights and later the sunshine and the high buildings. There has also been the first H&M-store I've seen here in the States. It's not a very popular store and barely any Americans know of this place.

Christmas came closer; I expected it to be one of the hardest times of the year. But then not Christmas itself was the bad thing, but the time before. Nothing had been as I was used to it, I missed my family so deeply, I couldn't stand it sometimes. But then the bad feelings past and I knew I grew a lot of independence. I got some new clothes, candy from home, some letters and Christmas cards. However, I can't say I enjoyed it very much, to many things and people were missing, to many traditions were not there, too much ugly stuff hung on the artificial Christmas tree. My host mom collects Santas and already got over sixty. And every year she decorates the whole house with these little creepy guys. They stared at you when you were eating or when you were watching TV.

But finally Christmas past and so did the Santas.

Magi is 17 years old and lives in Bradford in the US state of Ohio since summer last year (yes, this high school exchange student thing). On WOOLING.NET she tells you about the daily routine over there. Have a look on what she already published.

The Tradition of Homecoming
The annual event of homecoming is usually organized by either the Seniors or a special committee of the high school, college or university. For homecoming, all the alumni of the respective institution are invited to come back (home), meet old friends and see what's new on campus. Homecoming mostly consists of more than just one activity but is generally leading up to one special event such as the last football game of the season or a banquet, which is then usually is the fall prom just like Magi experienced it during the homecoming week at her high school.
